How to Help a Loved One Quit Smoking

We all know that cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health. It is, however, unfortunate that there are still so many people who decide to take this vice into their lifestyle. That’s because smoking can be addictive, and it’s something that people will find hard to quit after they’ve gotten hooked.Quit SmokingQuit Smoking

But it is possible for these people to quit smoking if they had help. If you had a loved one who’s addicted to smoking, you might be the only person who can convince him or her to quit. You need to know how to help him or her out.

Your support will be invaluable to the person. Tell the smoker that you will be there through the fight to quit smoking. By giving your support, you open doors to your relationship that will help you better understand why the person smokes to begin with, and what he or she goes through when withdrawal takes place.

People who withdraw from smoking (or any other kind of addiction for that matter) will have to face anxiety, irritability, headaches, nausea, and lots of stress. They’ll endlessly crave for nicotine one way or another. The only way to get through this phase is to distract the person. Show your support by spending time with the person by engaging in an activity that would keep his or her mind of smoking.

Survey your options for alternatives to Nicotine. You can’t expect your friend to completely avoid his or her dose of it, otherwise that will only strengthen the need to smoke, which isn’t a good thing. Try nicotine gums or patches. There are also electric cigars that you might want to try. Also, you can also try suggesting pills that are meant for those trying to quit smoking. These options will allow the person to redirect his or her interests away from cigarettes.

But the physical stuff is only half the battle. You have to make your friend realize how good it feels to quit smoking as well – that’s handling the emotional aspect of the quitting process. Make him or her feel good about what he or she is doing by appreciating all the effort that’s being taken to quit smoking. You need to let the person know that you know how hard it is and how much of an achievement it is for the both of you.

Further encourage your friend to engage in other activities that will take the mind of smoking. Most smokers use their vice as a means of passing the time, so don’t give them a reason to be bored and go back to smoking.

Lastly, you can also take your efforts to the next level by suggesting expert advice. Counseling will help smokers express and resolve personal issues that you may not be able to understand yourself – and that might be what will stand in the way of the person and his or her finally being able to quit smoking.
