WhatsApp is undoubtedly one of the best instant messaging systems used by smartphone users across multiple operating systems. WhatsApp is more popular across smartphone users because the app does not restrict the users to only sending and receiving text messages, but the users can also send and receive video files of any formats, music, pictures and other multimedia files with friends and family members. This app also allows its users to do voice chat with the contacts.

An important benefit of this app is that the users are not required to login to start conversation with their contacts. The app automatically reads the contacts stored in the phone/SIM card and the users can start communicating with them without the need of login. Its availability across multiple operating systems like Android, iOS, Symbian, Blackberry, Windows makes it even easier for the users to communicate and start their WhatsApp conversations. However, just like any other apps, WhatsApp users also run a high possibility of their conversations getting deleted either intentionally or accidentally.

It is not uncommon to loose or delete the conversations; however, the users should know how to recover the lost conversations and deleted files. Data recovery in WhatsApp is not a difficult task and can mainly be done in two ways. By default, WhatsApp automatically takes the backup of conversations and shared files to the external memory card every 24 hours. So getting the data back is not a difficult task provided you know how to do it.

If you want to recover data which is just a week old, then you need to uninstall the app and reinstall it. During the re-installation process, a message will prompt as “Restore message history”. When you click on the “Restore” option, the seven day old data will be retrieved from the memory card.

The above method can be used only to retrieve data of up to 7 days. To recover data which is more than 7 days old, use a tool called “Recover Messages”. To use this tool, you need to copy WhatsApp database folder to your PC.

This can be done by connecting the smartphone to your PC using a USB cable and copying the file present in /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases/msgstore.db.crypt to PC.

iOS users are required to go to net.whatsapp.Whatsapp/Documents/ChatStorage.sqlite#sthash.PxtZrIXc.dpuf and copy the files.

Now connect to internet and go to website: www.recovermessages.com and click on “Select SQLite File”, browse and attach the file which has already been copied to the PC. The process scans the messages, post which the users can recover the lost data.

While trying the above method, please be reminded that if the users opt for restoration of deleted data, current chat history can be lost after the backup is done.
